Sexual Immorality and the Bible
with a focus on Homosexuality and the Bible

Anger or Love?
It is so regrettable that much of what we may read or hear from Christian bodies regarding this subject may be justifiably graded as angry or vindictive. It was never, is not presently and would never be God’s will that any living man or woman would be angrily battered into understanding God’s heart or believing the Christian view on this subject. God, creator of all, loves all men and women so much that He gave His only begotten Son to die a cruel and gruesome death to free all humanity from sin, and because of His unfathomable love, it is His will that you would view this subject as He views this subject. Very simply (very often quoted for it is so true): God loves the sinner but not the sin.
We are all sinners!
Rom 3:23 “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;”
It is as important for the best of persons; the person who is a faithful father, who has lived a good, generous, kind, upright life, all his life, to come to the full realization of his need of a Saviour as it is for the thief, murderer, adulterer or homosexual to come to this realization. We all need the saving, justifying grace of God in our lives.
We are all sinners!

Sin is Sin
We are going to deal predominantly with homosexuality here because it is such a contemporary topic throughout society, all over the world and so often misrepresented. However, it must be understood that the Lord Jesus Christ cannot tolerate sin of any kind, which includes those things we read in 1Corinthians 6:9 and 10. Drunkenness, thievery, those who exploit others, covetousness, adultery — all of these sinful lifestyles will prevent entry into the Kingdom of God, BUT the good news comes in verse 11 when Paul writes: “And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus” Each and every one of these sins can be blotted out by the blood of Jesus. Each and every person who has ever lived, has needed Salvation through the blood of Jesus. Homosexuals do not stand aside to get a ‘special, extra cleansing wash’; the blood of Jesus is sufficient and blots out all and every kind of sin, completely. Indeed, if there is any distinction, it is that one who is forgiven much, loves much. Jesus says in Luke 7:47 “Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little.”
What does our Conscience Say?
God has written His law upon our hearts, upon the hearts of all humanity and it manifests in our consciences. Romans 2:14–15 “For. . . the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts* the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;” The conscience of all men and women will tell them that homosexuality is a sin but as sin is repeated, hearts are hardened to this ‘knowing’. “But exhort one another daily, while it is called Today; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.” (Hebrews 3:13) Sin sears the conscience. Sin, of any kind, sears the conscience so that the person no longer knows what is, and is not sin.
Guilt
Countless numbers of people who have come out of homosexuality or who have been freed from same-sex attraction, will confess to the extremely heavy load of guilt they had buried deep within their hearts. The guilt which comes with homosexuality is perhaps the greatest of all guilt loads — the thoughts* of a homosexual accuse them and very often taking drugs is the only way to dull this burden of guilt which often manifests as ‘accusing voices in the head’. (*Romans 2:15)

What does God say?
We know that Sodom and Gomorrah was a town where homosexuality and sexual promiscuity perverted the entire town except for Lot’s home. We read in Genesis 18 verse 20 that the Lord said that their “sin was very grievous” and we know that He destroyed that city because of the grievous sin. We also read in 1Corinthians 6:9 that along with thieves, idolaters and others, homosexuals will not inherit the kingdom of God: “Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate,[homosexuals] nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.” 'Not inherit the kingdom of God' means that the above list of sinners will spend eternity in Hell . . . a real, eternal place.
In the New Testament God makes it very clear that humanity knows what is right and what is wrong (what is ungodliness). Even if they have never read a Bible, they are without excuse (Romans 1:20). In Romans chapter one from verse 26 we read “For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: 27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly,[shameful, indecent] and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.” So, God calls homosexuality a ‘grievous sin’, ‘vile affection’, unnatural, shameful, indecent . . . in other words, God could not make himself any clearer: He cannot condone any sexual immorality or homosexuality and will send the unrepentant sexually immoral to a place of eternal suffering. This is not God's will, but man's choice. It is not God’s will that ANY should perish, but that ALL would repent, turn from their ways and inherit eternal life. 2Peter 3:9 "The Lord is . . . not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance."
Evolution has a large part to play in bringing this sin in to the realm of a commonly, publically accepted lifestyle (remember it was a criminal offence in most Western countries until the twentieth century) for if Evolution were true, then there is no creator or God; if Evolution were true then we are here by result of ‘chaos’ and evolving sludge. If this is so, then there is no God, and no ‘one day when we meet Him and give an account of our lives’. Blindness
God leaves us with no doubt: homosexuality is a sin but by re-classifying it as a ‘preferred lifestyle’ or ‘sexual orientation’ popular thinking or ‘social-speak’ has taken it out of the category of sin thereby removing homosexuals from the list of sinners who may find redemption in Christ. There is no greater blindness than the eyes that cannot see what sin is. “To be found by God (saved) we must first be lost.” If we categorize that which is sin as something acceptable then we are telling God in effect that His only son died for no reason.

Christian circles. . .
David & Jonathan
. . . have erroneously used David's relationship with Saul's son, Jonathan, to justify same-sex relationships. Erronesouly, because the relationship of David and Jonathan was certainly not one of lust nor was it sinful, but it is a beautiful picture of the relationship of any one person with Jesus Christ, Lord of all. Jonathan said that he loved David "as his own soul" — a picture of how we ought to love Jesus Christ. After Jonathan died, David said, "I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan: very pleasant hast thou been unto me: thy love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women." (IISamuel 1:26) Truly the love of God is more wonderful than the love from or of any man, woman or child. We love imperfectly, but Jesus Christ loves perfectly, passing the love of [wo]— men.
Born Gay?
It is not the intention of this article to sweep aside medical evidence and therefore, we must acknowledge that a very tiny percentage of babies are born without any reproductive organs. Modern medical science was not the first to reveal this: God in His Word makes it plain: Matthew 19:12 “For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother's womb:” Jesus goes on to say: “. . . and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it.” If a young man is not given to any feelings toward females, he should not think or accept that this automatically makes him gay; indeed he may be set aside to give himself unto God’s work. This is a ‘bracket’ very seldom acknowledged, but it is a real and possible lifestyle for both men and women who desire to give themselves entirely to God, but it remains a very small minority.
There are hormonal imbalances too, but Jesus died to heal our broken bodies, sickness and disease, and hormones levels are not excluded: through prayer and faith in God’s Word, God is able to bring hormone levels to a perfect equilibrium.
The total figure of those with any medical condition though, is far outweighed by the number of practising homosexuals who do not have any medical condition, so we can conclude that the majority of practising homosexuals do so by choice. There is simply no verifiable proof that a baby is born to be a homosexual as opposed to heterosexual. Also, and more importantly, it does not align with scripture.
It is about choice.
As society has forgotten the power of personal restraint and has become more and more hedonistic, so homosexuality has increased. The prevailing ethic is: you can/should live to please yourself.
First and foremost, the church has to accept the responsibility for not being salt and light to a lost and dying world.
Secondly, we can point to the tragic results of the parenting styles which allow the child to get his/her own way before he/she has the power to reason and know what it means to exercise the will. ‘Modern, liberal’ training of children makes the child the centre of the world and there is little opportunity taken to teach them to deny themselves. If abundance of food, choices of food, toys, choices of toys and activities go unchecked in a child’s early days, he/she will not learn self-control. There is a plague of irresponsible generosity and on the opposite end there is a plague of total neglect of training or love. “I just couldn’t help it” has become an all too common confession of the addict and convict. Addictions of any kind, whether they be sexual or chemical come back to an issue of self-discipline or self-control.

If a little boy is sexually abused from a young age, he will know little else or understand little else than what he has experienced as his sexuality and he may grow up to want to like girls, but finds he cannot. Jesus said: Matthew 18:6 “But whoso shall offend [scandalize, trip up, to entrap; entice to sin] one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea”. But whether you are the offended or the offender, the life in Jesus Christ offered to you today can set you free to live as if you never did it, or it never happened to you.
Maybe as a result of abuse, or the absence of a parent’s love, you now find that you are attracted to the same sex. Is that you? If so, then may I reiterate that God’s love for you is total and all-sufficient. Now that we have laid out scripture above to show you that sexual immorality of any kind is not God’s will for your life, repent and ask God to be your all-in-all and to take away sinful desires and replace them with His love. It is also important for you to know that every, I said, EVERY, man, woman and child is tempted, in different areas, but it is what we do with that temptation that will bring death or life. Do we entertain it so that it brings forth lust, so that the lust brings forth sin and sin, death? Read James 1:14–15 “.”But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death”
Again, you cannot hear it often enough, you are not left on your own to overcome temptation. Repent and ask Jesus Christ to take control. Christ himself told us to pray daily: “. . . give us today our daily bread and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. . .” (The Lord’s Prayer) Christ knew we would face temptation daily but He is able to deliver us from evil. You do not have to know any ‘fancy’ prayer: if all you can say is “Deliver me from evil, oh, God!” then you have made a good start to overcoming.

Julie’s Story. . .
Julie often says that if she talks about her ‘old life’ she can no longer think of that person as herself. She cannot imagine that those things happened to her; that she did those things or that she lived that life — such is the power of the blood of Jesus, His Word and His Spirit. Daily, as she picks up her cross to follow Christ, she leaves the old Julie behind and walks on in the power of the living God.
When two people from Julie’s past met her on the street recently, their mouths literally dropped open as they realized that this was the same Julie that they had once known. Their surprise was born out of the fact that Julie no longer looked the way she had in the past; Julie now looks as feminine as any other Welsh lady with children and grandchildren. Their comments to Julie indicated that they were most surprised because they believe that people are ‘born gay’ and therefore cannot change. Julie went on to tell them her testimony and tell them that they could read her full story to learn how God had changed her and set her free. She assured them that people are not ‘born gay’ and needless to say, she went away much encouraged that they had battled to recognise her due to her altered appearance.
Whilst Julie was entirely set free from her sinful desires when she asked God to wash her, cleanse her and save her, her outward appearance, style of clothing and gait did not change overnight. Indeed, the change came as God by His Spirit sanctified her and inspired her to leave the old masculine clothing and mannerisms behind her. She, like all of us, is being changed from glory to glory.
Absolutes
The absence of absolutes in our world today has caused havoc. Because the Church has blurred the lines and extended the boundaries beyond that which God ordained, the world has come in to the church and the church has ceased going to the world with a clear message of hope and redemption. The world’s message to the young today in every aspect of media and popular culture is ‘blur the lines’: Little boys’ clothes are now purposely available in girls’ colours, girls’ clothes are increasingly less feminine as they mature into their teens; boys style their hair like girls and girls walk and talk like ‘guys’ — all under the banner of ‘trendy’, ‘hip’, ‘in’, ‘with-it’.
Many homosexuals will tell you that it all started in their youth when they habitually imitated the opposite sex. As in Julie’s case her own parents, more particularly her father, dressed her as a boy. But not all young girls who later have an issue in this area had a parent cross-dress them. Rejection from a group of friends can push a young girl to dress as a tomboy and likewise boys, who may not have the masculine figure of their friends, may begin to dress and care for their hair as only a girl should.
Imitation opens the door to mannerisms and behavior, and behavior opens the door to a lifestyle; and lifestyle opens the door to a life of sin. God in His wisdom told parents to train up a child in the way that he/she should go and a major part of this is that parents guide daughters toward femininity and sons toward masculinity.
We could digress in to a study on masculinity and femininity here but we will keep that for another time. But briefly we must acknowledge that there is generally a warped view of what masculinity/femininity is. Say the word ‘feminine’ to most people and they will think of a ‘Barbie Doll’. Say ‘masculine’ and an ‘Action Man’ image will come to mind. But true femininity comes from the inside; the little girl who blushes; the woman whose ‘eyes are covered’(see Sara and Abraham Genesis 20:16).True masculinity comes from the inside when that protective, strong, resolute leadership comes forth from the inside of a young husband. If you are struggling in this area, know this: as you get to know God, your Creator, through reading the Bible, He will teach you and mould you to be that man or woman He created you to be. In all things, the more we know Him, the more we will be what He created us to be.
Come, let us RETURN unto God! One of the evidences of our return unto the Holy, loving God is that our men will dress as men; our women will dress as women; our boys will be masculine and our girls will be feminine, not because we are told to, but because we walk after the Spirit and not after the flesh. Outward appearance is an expression of the inward heart. Come, let us return!

Are you praying for a loved-one?
Are you praying for a loved-one who is caught up in this or any sinful lifestyle? I want to remind you of a scene from the book: (if you haven’t read it already, it is “Julie’s Story — free indeed” by Candace Malcomson, Emerald-Ambassador Publications) You may remember that in the police cell, the Spirit of God convicts Julie and she cries out, “Only God have I sinned against. . !” That scripture is found in Psalm 51:5 “Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight:” Remember this as you pray for your loved ones: they are sinning against God and not you; they rebel against God, not you. When we hold this in mind, it may help us to love them and show them love whilst yet praying that they be released from the soul’s prison.
Have you just come away?
. . . away from this or any sinful lifestyle? Here is the best advice you can get: Psalm 119:11 “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” HIDE GOD’s WORD in your heart. Read the Bible; memorize passages and meditate upon it day and night.
Julie’s Story again. . . her homosexual activity was fuelled through her drug addiction and drug-dealing. A homosexual nightclub proved to be green pasture for a drug dealer.
What opened the door for you? Countless thousands come in through the door of financial need to support their drug-addiction so they go in to prostitution. Though they may hate it, the vicious spiral of sin soon drives them into the ground.
Whatever circumstance you may point to, ultimately you stepped in to a life of sin because the heart of every man and woman is sin-filled. Without Christ, we love sin.
